I have not seen Ida Jane Goodhue's birth record, but her obituary states that she was born on 20 November 1871 in Mapleton, Maine, and I haven't seen any contradictory records.
The earliest record for her that I've seen is the 1880 census from Castle Hill, Maine, where she was living with her parents, her older brother, and her baby sister. See lines 12–16 in the image below:
The Goodhue family moved south to Auburn, Maine, around 1890 and Ida's father, William Henry Goodhue, died shortly thereafter. Her mother, Mary Ann (Raven) Goodhue died in Auburn on 17 January 1899. By age 28, Ida had lost both of her parents, and five months later, she married attorney Herbert C. Royal on 21 June 1899. The marriage record below states that Ida was working as a "ladies' tailor" at the time:
The 1900 census record below shows Herbert, Ida, and her younger sister Amy, living in Auburn at 110 Hampshire Street on lines 13–15:
That apartment building is still there. Here's a photo I took on 20 August 2022:
Ida's marriage to Herbert did not go well, though. Just five years after their marriage, he left her in June 1904. This notice ran for three consecutive Thursdays in The Lewiston Daily Sun, starting on 27 February 1908:
On 25 April 1908, Ida was granted a divorce from Herbert by reason of desertion. See the bottom line of this excerpt from the 1908 Maine Divorce Records from Androscoggin County:
The divorce was also reported in the newspaper:
I have had no luck finding Ida on the 1910 census. If anyone else has, please let me know...
Ida did not remain single for very long, marrying William W. Casey, who was a letter carrier, in Auburn on 29 June 1911. Both bride and groom were 38 years old and interestingly, the marriage record below states that Ida was "widowed,” which was not true:
The 1920 census from Auburn shows William and Ida living at 16 Davis Avenue. See lines 86–87 on the census image below, followed by a photo of the house taken 20 August 2022:
Ida was very active socially, often attending and hosting luncheons, auctions and meetings of the Neighborhood Garden Club, the Now and Then Club and a Whist club.
The couple, then in their late 50s, were still living at 16 Davis Avenue in Auburn during the 1930 census. See lines 18–19 in the image below:
Ida's final appearance on the census would come in 1940. She and William were retired and still living at 16 Davis Avenue in Auburn. See lines 44–45 in the image below:
Ida passed away on 17 July 1946 at Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston. Her obituary follows:
Ida was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Auburn.
