Rose Ann Farley was born to John and Elizabeth (Leighton) Farley in June 1869 in Hodgdon, Maine. FamilySearch shows her birth date as June 10th, but I have not come across any records that confirm that, with the closest being the 1900 census, which lists "June 1869." The family's 1870 census record was dated June 22nd and it states that she is 1, so June 10th seems feasible.
Here's the aforementioned census record showing her parents, their domestic servant, and her sister Amanda at the bottom of this page (lines 37–40):
And here's the next page, which has Rose and five of her other siblings at the top on lines 1–6:
By 1880, John, Elizabeth, and the children still living at home had moved to Woodland, Maine, where sisters Rose and Evelyn would meet their future husbands, brothers John Edward and William Henry Raven.
The 1880 Woodland census shows the Farleys on lines 6–11 in the following image:
I have not found a marriage record, but Rose likely married William Henry Raven around 1887. Their first child, Etta May Raven, was born on 17 June 1888 in Washburn, Maine. Their next two children would also be daughters and both would be born in Woodland: Ida Vivena in 1891, and Bertha in 1893. Bertha died at just over a year old due to scarlet fever. Their next child, Lyme, was born in 1895, but he didn't even make it to a year old, succumbing to croup. The couple's fifth child, Perley William, was born on 4 August 1896 in Wade Plantation, Maine. Irving Hearl followed in 1899, born in Washburn.
The family was living in Woodland in 1900 on the farm that had previously belonged to William Neal Raven and had been divided between William Henry and his older brother, John. William, Rose, and their surviving four children are on lines 95–100 in the image below:
William and Rose had one more child, John E. Raven, in 1902, but he died of meningitis at around 18 months old. After losing three children before the age of two, Rose then lost her sister (and sister-in-law), Evelyn, in 1903, followed shortly thereafter by her husband, who had been in ill health for years. William died of tuberculosis in 1904 when he was just 38 years old.
Rose and her children left Woodland, which had seen so much tragedy, for Wade Plantation where she married her widowed brother-in-law, John Edward Raven in 1905. Here is their marriage record:
Rose gave birth to two children with John in Wade Plantation: Herman Beecher Raven in 1906, and Hazel Faye Raven in 1909. Shortly thereafter, they moved south to Knox in Waldo County, Maine. Their big, blended family appears on lines 32–42 in the image below:
Rose gave birth to their final child, Dorothy "Dot" Madelon Raven, in 1911 in Knox.
John and Rose raised their children in Knox. Several of the children had moved out and started their own families by the time of the 1920 census, which shows the family on lines 64–71 in the following image:
By 1930, the only two children still living at home were Herman and Dot. John's cousin, Robert Hanson, was also living with them. See lines 4–8 in the image below:
In 1940, John and Rose were empty-nesters living in Winterport, Maine. They appear on lines 46 and 47 in the image below:
Here's a photo of them from around that time, I'd guess:
If anyone knows when/where this photo was taken, please let me know.
Rose passed away on 2 March 1942 in Monroe, presumably at their home. The closest thing I've found for an obit is this barely legible death notice:
It seems to read:
Raven — in Monroe, March 2. Rose
Ann, wife of John Raven, formerly
of Knox, aged 72 years 8 months
and 20 days.
John would pass away less than a year later and they were buried together in Pilgrim's Home Cemetery in Monroe, Maine.
